Abstract

In the field of Ophthalmology, Amniotic membrane transplantation
has been first used by De Roetth in 1940 to treat conjunctival defects However De Roetth used ”live” human amniotic membrane which
contained live cells, and thus was accompanied by undesirable aJlograft
rejectipns.
Recently, the technique of preparation and preservation has been
revised, with cryopreservation of the membrane at - 80C degrees.
This has lead to marked improvement in the post operative results of
Amniotic membrane transplantation in various ocular surface disorders
viz: recurrent pterygium with symblepharon, persistent epithelial defects
of the cornea, ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, chemical and thennal
injuries and in covering large conjunctival defects following the surgical
removal of large conjunctival masses.
The transplanted membrane tissue was found to take easily and was
not accompanied with any aJlograft rejections following the recently
described technique of preparation and cryopreservation. This has thus
offered a major contribution to the treahnent of many challenging cases
