Abstract

Pneumonia is an inflammatory condition of the lung affecting primarily the alveoli. It is classified according to time of occurrence into early onset pneumonia, which usually occurs in the first six days of transplantation and late onset pneumonia, which usually occurs after this time point. The types of causative pathogens and their susceptibility differ between these two categories, so specific empirical antimicrobial therapy guidelines have been implemented according to these distinctions. This work aimed to study the incidence of pneumonia among patients who underwent living donor liver transplantation, aiming to improve the operation outcome. This retrospective study was carried out on 100 patients who underwent liver transplantation in Mansoura Gastroenterology Surgical Center, 92 males and 8 females aging from 22 to 65 years. Medical files of the patients were examined for incidence of pneumonia and its causative organisms. All patients were divided into 3 groups. group A: early onset pneumonia, it included 15 patients (representing 15% of all studied patients), they had pneumonia in the first 6 days after liver transplantation operation. group B: late onset pneumonia included 3 patients (representing 3% of all studied patients), they had pneumonia after 6 days of liver transplantation operation. group C: no pneumonia group included 82 patients without pneumonia (representing 82% of all studied patients).
