Abstract The concept of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for healing stimulation has been existed for over 25 years now. Briefly, platelets, once activated, release bioactive proteins (growth factors and cytokines) that improve reparative and regenerative processes. It is easily prepared, fast, safe (due to its autologous origin), and cheap. PRP is commonly used in various medical fields, as rheumatology, orthopedic, dermatology, regenerative sport medicine, and plastic surgery, with remarkable results. Platelets release growth factors, which include platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor (TGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and insulin-like growth factor (IGF), and are secreted from the alpha-granules of concentrated platelets activated by aggregation inducers. They improve reparative and regenerative processes. VEGF is the most powerful and ubiquitous of known vascular growth promoters, it is best known for its role in vasculogenesis, it regulates the proliferation, migration, and survival of endothelial cells. VEGF promotes bone formation through osteoblast and chondroblast recruitment and is also a monocyte chemo-attractant. |
