Abstract

Hand injuries account for nearly 10% of hospital emergency department visits. Series of 1000 consecutive hand injuries showed the following distribution: 42% lacerations (cuts), 27% contusions (bruises), 17% fractures (broken bones), and 5% infections(1).
Aim of the Work: To collect data concerned with hand injuries to El Demerdash hospital in the period 2016 - 2017 and their further statistical analysis with the previous year. To provide a clinical description of hand injuries with etiology and mechanism.
Patients and Methods: This retrospective study was conducted in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery unit in Ain shams University Hospital and Plastic Surgery Unit in El-Demerdash Hospital on all admitted hand injuries cases during the period of this study (from January 2016 to January 2017) and Thereafter a comparison will be done between these results and results of previous year.
Results: As regard demographic data, the mean age was 27–31 years. The male to female ratio was 2.2:1. Nearly, three forth of the hand injury patients presented within 2 h of injury. The mean delay in presentation was 2.9 h. Right and left hands were injured with similar frequency, 51.8% and 45.4% respectively. There was a greater incidence of lacerations, amputations, and fractures they also included wrist injuries. In both years the majority of trauma was occupational and represented by 83.40% in current year and 76.60% in last year.
