Abstract

The study aims at experimenting a different method for expressing sustainability to urban communities which is the concept of Social Cohesion. It is also an intangible tool for conservation, one of the main concepts of social sustainability of an urban setting and an element of the contemporary Sustainable Development Goals. Social Cohesion is hardly well defined concept in addition to the lack of specific agreement on its measurement and application. The thesis objective is detecting the relationship between Social cohesion and the renovation process of heritage based and historic districts. As well as setting measurement criteria that gathers the Social Sustainability of a community with its built setting. In achieving the purpose of the study, the researcher delved into social cohesion definitions, indicators, measurement tools with respect to spatial attributes. Also the surveillance of cultural heritage in the matter of definitions, relations and dimensions resulting in a combined list of measurement attributes between the tangible and intangible aspects of the study. For completing the practical framework of the study two listed areas were chosen to investigate social cohesion and relate them to sustainability scales. A qualitative analysis done on the chosen districts to analyze the areas with respect to the amount of change and law violation in a time lapse of 10 years. In addition, the road types, accessibility and density were also included as indicators. The other analysis was quantitative online survey on the residents of the chosen districts and statistical analysis was carried out. The results revealed a direct relation between social cohesion and urban sustainability of conservation areas. However the excess amount social cohesion also has a negative impact on urban sustainability. Therefore the cohesion scale should reach a certain amount according to the density and the urban morphology.
