Abstract

Skin tags, soft fibromas, fibro-epithelial polyps, or acrochordons all are alternative terms to describe a common benign skin condition, which consists of skin projecting from the surrounding skim. They are skin colored to dark brown sessile or pedunculated papillomas commonly occurring on the neck and less common in the axillae and eyelids. They are common in middle-aged individuals and elderly and have the same incidence in both sexes. Histologically the stroma has a loose fibrous connective tissue. with dilated blood vessels resembling papillary dermis. The definite etiology of skin tags is still unknown. Hormonal imbalance, obesity, DM, increase mast cell count, colonic polyps, human papilloma virus, acromegaly, pregnancy, organ transplantation and skin rubbing have been suggested as contributing factors. Current treatment of skin tags involve clipping or shaving the lesion at the base, cryotherapy, or diathermy. They also may be destroyed by elecrocautary, Multiple skin tags have been associated with abnormalities in the glucose metabolism, specifically type 2 DM and hyperinsulinemia. Insulin resistance is a metabolic disorder in which target cells fail to respond to normal levels of circulating insulin. It is a central element of metabolic syndrome which is complex of factors including raised blood pressure, elevated blood glucose, cholesterol & triglycerides levels, low HDL level and obesity ( particularly central obesity).
