Abstract

Nowadays the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) is a standard safety feature in modern vehicles. Therefore, this study is focused on investigating the vehicle performance during different braking maneuvers using the ABS. On the other hand, the proper selection of anti-roll bar (ARB) is also investigated to reduce the vehicle lateral shift during braking due to the roll motion of the vehicle.
A one axle 6-DOF Vertical-Lateral vehicle mathematical model considering the roll motion of the vehicle body and the rotational motion of the wheels is developed. The suspension system is modeled as independent suspension with Anti-roll bar. The tire-road interface is modeled using Magic formula together with a single point of contact road excitation considering the road roughness. On the other hand, the ABS control algorithm is developed based on the PID control theory employing wheel slip control strategy.
The vehicle simulations are focused on three case studies present the effect of using the ABS controller on the vehicle braking performance and the anti-roll bar selection on the vehicle vertical and roll motions and the lateral shift of the vehicle during straight ahead braking. The braking performance is evaluated in terms of stopping distance and time, while the ride comfortable is evaluated in terms of vertical and roll accelerations. In addition to that, the vehicle lateral displacement is considered as an indicator to the vehicle lateral shift during braking.
The obtained simulation results showed that, using the ABS improved the braking performance in terms of the stopping distance and time in comparison with the conventional brake system for all the investigated case studies. Furthermore, the vehicle roll and lateral dynamics in the split µ braking maneuvers is improved by the proper selection of the Anti-roll bar.
