Abstract

The current thesis is divided into two studies as a part from our
ongoing project. In the first we choose Cyperus alternifolius plant for bioassay
guided isolation, purification and structure elucidation with the
determination the antioxidant activity of extracts.
Secondly essential oil extraction and processing antioxidant
activity on it.
The present research work aims at:-
1. Extraction for each of aerial parts and tubers of C. alternifolius.
2. Isolation and identification of the chemical constituents of the tuber
extracts.
3. Screening of the biological activity for the extracts.
4. Extraction and identification for C. alternifolius essential oil and
evaluate its antioxidant activity.
The present study covered the following points:
Chapter 1: Introduction and literature review
It includes literature survey about Cyperus species
Chapter 2: Experimental work
It describes the apparatus and methods used for isolation,
purification, identification of compound(s) and extraction of essential oil
from C. alternifolius. It describes the mechanism of biological activities
as well.
Chapter 3: Results and discussion
Our investigation on plant C. alternifolius leads to Identification of
compound(s) isolated from C. alternifolius (quercetin 3-O-glucoside).
Five compounds were identified by using LC-MS (quercetin,
5
isorhamnetin, salcolin, glabranine and ferulic acid) with the biological
activity of plant extracts.
Extraction of essential oil and make the biological activity on it
Published paper
The paper discusses the extraction of essential oil from C.
alternifolius and identification of their constituents showed that terpenes
are the main class of the oil. The alcoholic extracts for tubers and aerial
parts showed significant antioxidant activity.
