Abstract

According to previous studies, around 50- 80% of dialysis patients have problems associated with sleep disorders, including difficulty in falling asleep, waking up early, daytime sleepiness, leg jerking and trembling. Also, poor sleep quality affects many hemodialysis patients and can leave a significant negative impact on their quality of life and health status (Shu-Yu & Te-Cheng, 2011).
In fact, sleep hygiene is a set of personal habits that determines the sleep quality (Zisberg, Gur-Yaish & Shochat, 2010). The aim of this study was to determine the effect of sleep hygiene training program on quality of sleep among patients with hemodialysis.
Setting: The study was carried out at hemodialysis units of Menoufia University and Shebin El-Kom teaching hospitals.
Subjects: A consecutive sample of 100 patients of both sexes on hemodialysis was randomly selected and assigned alternatively into two equal groups, 50 patients for each group.
 Study group (I): exposed to sleep hygiene training program along with routine hospital care.
 Control group (Π): exposed only to routine hospital care.
Tools of the study: two tools were utilized for data collection
Tool 1: Structured Interview questionnaire.
Tool 2: Pittsburg sleep quality index (PSQI).The main findings of the present study were
 There were significant improvements in mean total and subtotal knowledge scores about disease process, hemodialysis and sleep hygiene training program among study group I than control group II post program than before.
 There were significant improvements in the total and subtotal sleep quality scores of the subjects of study group I than control group II post sleep hygiene training program than before.
Conclusion
Mean total sleep quality scores were improved among hemodialysis patients who followed sleep hygiene training program (study group) than those who exposed only to the routine hospital care (control group).
Recommendations
Supervised health education should be carried out for all patients on hemodialysis about sleep hygiene to improve their sleep quality and a colored illustrative booklet about disease, hemodialysis and sleep hygiene instructions should be available and distributed to all hemodialysis patients.
