Abstract

Outcome prediction is an important issue in intensive care units for providing information on likely patient outcomes for clinicians and relatives of critically ill patients. Hypoalbuminemia at admission is common in critical illnesses in all populations, and proved to be a strong predictor for clinical outcome in adults. Because serum albumin is a simple, cheap and sensitive marker, it has been used for several purposes in adult ICUs including outcome prediction. Although hypoalbuminemia is a common finding in critically ill children, there is lack in data that evaluate its usefulness in predicting clinical outcome. We aimed to evaluate the hypoalbuminemia as a predictor of clinical outcome in critically ill children.
We performed a retrospective study during three year period from 1st January 2014 to the end of December 2016 that included 825 critically ill children admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit. Three hundred thirty eight patients were excluded due to insufficient data, not fulfilling inclusion criteria or having one or more excluding criteria. We categorized children as hypoalbuminemic or non-hypoalbuminemic at admission and during admission. Our primary outcome was the fate as survival or death and length of PICU stay.
