Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate denture base deformation (using strain gauge measurements) and posterior ridge resorption (using CBCT) of bar, locator and resilient telescopic attachments for two-implant stabilized overdentures in subjects with mandibular atrophied ridges. Materials and methods: twelve edentulous individuals with mandibular ridge atrophy were randomly assigned into 3 equal groups and received 2 implants in the canine areas. Mandibular overdentures were constructed and attached to implants with Dolder bar attachments (BOD), resilient telescopes (TOD) and Locators (LOD). Denture base deformation was evaluated by strain measurements during clenching without, and with (hard, soft) food. Posterior ridge resorption was analyzed radiographically using CBCT. Also, bite force measurements were done. All evaluations were 2 year post-operatively. Results : During clenching without food, with hard and soft food, bottom gauges implant sites recorded compressive strains, and top gauges recorded tensile strain for all groups. Higher strain levels recorded with BOD. BOD recorded the highest bone volume loss, followed by TOD and LOD showed the lowest loss. TOD scored the greatest bite force, followed by BOD, while LOD showed the lowest bite force. Conclusion: Resilient telescopic and Locator attachments can be used successfully for two- implant stabilized overdentures in subjects with mandibular atrophied ridges after two years follow up period as regard to denture base deformation and posterior ridge resorption. Telescopic attachments were associated with higher bite force.
