Abstract

In Egypt there are large numbers of Arabian horse farms that represent a wealth for the Egyptians. The economic losses in last years caused by EHVs infections were great reached millions of pounds due to abortion and neonatal mortality.
Our study was conducted on 8 cases of abortion and neonatal deaths of mares and she donkey from different localities in Egypt during May 2015 until October 2017 to isolate, identify and report most pathological lesions of the local EHV-1 among different equidae species. Two aborted fetuses and one neonatal foal death from mares beside one aborted fetus from she-donkey revealed positive EHV-1 and others 4 cases were excluded.
Our investigation revealed that one of two cases of EHV1 aborted mares showed no significant clinical signs and other revealed anorexia, mild respiratory manifestation, interruption during walking and edema of the lower limbs before abortion.
Concering aborted fetuses from mare; the most common gross lesions were generalized icterus, subcutaneous and pericardial edema with petechial to ecchymotic hemorrhages on the epicardium. The lungs revealed edema, hemorrhages and exudate within air passages beside pneumonic areas. Multi-focal white areas randomly distributed on the liver with focal thickening of the hepatic capsule were seen .Kidneys were soft with patches of congestion or hemorrhages in renal cortex. The placenta of 2 cases appeared edematous and congested.
Microscopically, the liver revealed thickening of the hepatic capsule, various types of cell injuries in the hepatic cells mainly microsteatosis and necrosis. Portal vessels and sinusoids were dilated with evidence of thrombosis in the central and portal veins. EINIB were noticed inside the degenerated hepatic cells. The fetal pulmonary tissues revealed pulmonary edema and disseminated thrombi within the pulmonary blood vessels. Moreover, EINIB within bronchial epithelial cells were noticed. The kidneys revealed severely congested blood vessels beside focal necrotic changes in some renal tubules and distorted glomeruli. Sometimes, necrotic tubules had evidence of calcification. The spleen showed intense lymphoid depletion of white pulps with focal thickening of the splenic capsule. Some myocardial muscle fibers revealed different types of cell injuries varied from cloudy swelling , microsteatosis to myolysis. The placenta showed microcotyledonary infarction of chorionic villi beside degenerative changes, vacuolation, vesicle formation or desquamation and necrosis of trophoblsts. A few trophoblasts showed syncytial formations and contain EINIB.
