Abstract

Lead (Pb) toxicity is a common form of heavy metal intoxication. It is well recorded as one of the most dangerous and insidious poisons ,lead is a toxic metal with many target organs such as hematopoietic system, immune system , nervous system, kidney and liver .
Spirulina contains proteins , lipids, carbohydrate, some minerals, vitamins including β-carotene and C-phycocyanin so, act as antioxidant .
Simultaneous administration of Spirulina and lead decrease levels of lipid peroxidation products. Spirulina has an important
activity on scavenging free radicals and protecting the organs from the
lead toxicity damage.
The present study was designed to illustrate the protective role of spirulina on rats intoxicated with lead with reference to effect of spirulina on hematology , liver function enzymes ,oxidant and antioxidant enzymes , histopathology and residues of lead.
This experiment was carried out on sixty male albino rats devided equally to4 groups each of 15 rats as following
group 1: Healthy control group
group 2: spirulina platensis (75mg / 200 gm b.wt) orally by stomach tube for 30 successive days
group 3: lead acetate (4mg /200 gm b.wt) orally by stomach tube for 30 successive days
group 4: spirulina (75mg / 200 gm b.wt) & lead acetate (4mg / 200 gm.
