Abstract

Background:Cesarean section is one of the most commonly performed obstetrical operations all over the world and Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is a leading cause of maternal mortality and morbidity , using sublingual misoprostol during CS may decrease excessive blood loss during CS and prevent uterine atony.
Aim of work:is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of sublingual misoprostol in reducing blood loss during cesarean section.
Methods:Randomized, double blinded, prospective controlled trial .This clinical trial has be conducted at Ain-Shams University Maternity Hospital, A total of 142women that has fulfilled the inclusion criteria will be enrolled in the study, 72 of them has received sublingual 400µg misoprostol(Sigma),and 70 received placebo .primary and secondary outcomes was measured for collection and analysis of data.
Results:There was highly significant difference in blood loss intraoperative between two groups with mean blood loss of misoprostol group (559.4±62.8) and (663.2 ±62.1) for placebo group. vaginal bleeding after 6hrs for misoprostol group was (108.3±36.6) and (150.0 ±57.7) for placebo group. There was also highly significant difference between two groups of blood loss after 24 hours with significant reduce of blood loss among misoprostol groups
.Conclusion:Sublingual Misoprostol is effective and safe in reducing blood loss during cesarean section.
