Abstract

The mycobiota associated with six extremely different environments(or sources) were intensively studied. Four of them are natural, namely skin infected with fungi, mud of saline and fresh water, flowers of ornamental and edible fruit plants and gut of three insects. The two other environments are man-made, dairy products and fresh juices. Identification of genera and species was performed using the morphological and microscopic characteristics in addition to the biochemical in case of yeasts. Molecular techniques [Internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences of nuclear ribosomal DNA were amplified using primers ITS1, ITS4] were employed for yeast isolates (256) and some of suspected isolates of filamentous fungi (7). All strains sequenced of the yeast and filamentous strains were deposited at Assiut University Mycological Centre Culture Collection (AUMC), and their ITS gene sequences were deposited at the National Center for Biotechnological Information (NCBI) and accession numbers are given for them.
A total of 461 species (429 species identified to species level in addition to 32 unidentified ones), assigned to 155 genera were collected. One hundred and 11 species (from which 5 unidentified species), related to 47 genera of yeast fungi and 350 species (from which 28 unidentified species), belong to 108 genera of filamentous fungi and were gathered. DRBC supported higher total number of species than other isolation media used. One hundred and 23 species are new records to Egypt (70 species of yeasts and 53 filamentous fungi). Two species namely Reniforma rhynchophori Moubasher, Abdel-Sater and Zeinab Soliman, and Triadelphia moubasherii Abdel-Sater and Zeinab Soliman were described as new to science. Full descriptions of these two species are included in the Appendix. Moreover, to the best of our knowledge, 21 are probably new to science of yeasts (18 species) and filamentous fungi (3 species) and more collaborative research work are urged to describe these new species. Representative strains of all fungi identified phenotypically (343 strains), or genotypically and phenotypically (263 strains) are deposited at Assiut University Mycological Center Culture Collection (AUMC).
