Abstract

Dental age estimation is required in various clinical and scientific
disciplines including Paediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, Archaeology,
Palaeontology and Forensic dentistry.
The aim of the study was to assess and compare the accuracy of
Willems, London atlas and Cameriere methods for age estimation among
children and adolescents based on degree of teeth development, stage of
teeth eruption combined with pattern of teeth development and degree of
apex closure.
The study was conducted on panoramic radiographs of 400 healthy
Egyptian children and adolescents (200 boys and 200 girls) aged 5 to 15
years, who were selected from outpatient clinics, Faculty of Dentistry, Tanta
University. chronological age for each participant was calculated by
subtracting date of birth from date of radiograph and the real age was blinded
from the researcher.
In Willems method, panoramic images were recorded on computer
files then the seven mandibular left teeth excluding the third molar had been
scored as ‘0’ for absence of calcification, and ‘A’ to ‘H’, depending on the
stage of calcification. Each letter corresponds to a score which is the dental
age fraction using tables for boys and girls then by summing the adapted
scores for the seven left mandibular teeth directly had resulted in the
estimated dental age.
