Abstract

Among the herbs, garlic (Allium sativum) has been called the wonder drug of the herbal world due to its multi functional benefits. A yeast cell wall component, β-1, 3/1, 6-glucan, augments the response to disease in poultry and other species; however, the mechanism of action is not clear.
This study was designed to determine the effects of Garlic and β-glucan on growth performance, white blood cell profiles, humoral immune response of broilers against NDV, relative organs weight and its histopathology was studied. One hundred day old broiler chicks were randomly allocated into three groups A, B and C. They divided as 40 for both of group A and B and 20 for group C. Parameters response evaluated include body weight, weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, HI,TWBCs, DWBCs, also liver, spleen, and bursa weights and their ratio and histopathology for immune organs. The experiment lasted for 41 days. β-glucan and Allicin 1ml\litter for each were supplemented in drinking water of broiler chicken 2 day before and 2 after vaccination against NDV and IBD.
At the end of the experiment broilers administered β-glucan had the best body weight amoung 3 groups and had significantly increasing followed by allicin which improved the final body weight statistically but not significantly then control.
The feed intake was decreased in group administered β-glucan at first 3 weeks but in last 2 weeks the feed intake increased and improved compared to the Control group. In allicin group decreased feed intake in the entire experiment period compared to the control group.
No significant differences between groups in periods (17-24), (24-31) or (31-38) days in BWG. Improving for feed converation rate (FCR) for both allicin and β-glucan groups compared to control group in over the experimental period.
The highest HI titer was noticed in chicken treated with allicin followed by group treated with β- glucan in comparison with the control group.
There were increasing in TWBCs and lymphocytes in both of allicin and β-glucan groups compared to group C in the entire experimental period but not significant.
At the first 3 weeks (1 to 21 day) the effect of allicin group increasing significantly on liver weight but on the last 3 weeks (22 to 41 day) hadn’t any effect on liver weight.
The best group is β-glucan in spleen weight and ratio. Allicin hadn’t any effect on spleen weight and ratio at the entire experimental period.
β-glucan had improved bursa weight and ratio which significantly increasing on all the experiment. Allicin increased the bursa weight and ratio. β-glucan and Allicin supplementation had positive effect on bursa and spleen structure.
