Abstract Cerebral stroke is the second leading cause of death according to the recent WHO statistics after ischemic heart disease. There is a strong correlation between the incidence of cerebral stroke and the presence of carotid artery disease. Stenosis of the ICA occurs mostly due to atherosclerosis leading to progressive narrowing of the vessel lumen causing decreased cerebral perfusion and predispose to the rupture of the atherosclerotic plaques causing distant embolism. Risk factors predisposing to carotid artery stenosis include hypertension, diabetes mellitus, heavy alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking and hypercholesterolemia. Patients with symptomatic carotid stenosis usually presented with recurrent attacks of TIAs which predispose to cerebral ischemia and subsequent stroke. |
