Abstract

Measurements of client satisfaction play an increasingly important role in the growing push toward accountability among health care providers. Overshadowed by measures of clinical processes and outcomes in the quality of care equation, client satisfaction measurement has traditionally been related to service improvement efforts by health care organization and physician practices, and to fulfill accreditation requirements of health plans, while some plans tie satisfaction scores to financial incentives.
Aim of the study:
The present study aimed to identify women’s satisfaction with family planning services affiliated to maternity hospitals in Alexandria.
To fulfill the study aim:
The study was conducted at four Family Planning Clinics affiliated to four maternity hospitals in Alexandria city namely: El-Shatby Maternity University Hospital affiliated to Alexandria University. Dar- Ismail Maternity Hospital affiliated to Ministry of Health. Faisal Hospital affiliated to Health Insurance. Dar El Welada Hospital (Maternitee) affiliated to Medical Health Association.
Subjects:
The study populations consist of 240womenof those who attended the previously mentioned setting (60 from each)
Tools used in this study:
Two tools were designed, developed, validated, and utilized by the researcher to collect the necessary data.
Tool I: socio-demographic and clinical data interview schedule
This tool was developed by the researcher, based on reviewing of the recent related literature to identify socio demographic and clinical characteristics of the study subject.
Tool II: Women’s satisfaction with family planning services scale
This tool was originally developed by Bruce’s (1991) to measure the women satisfaction, quality of family planning services in developing countries. It was adapted and translated into Arabic language by the researcher. This scale includes a total of 40 items; each item is rated on a three-points Likert- like scale ranging from 1 to 3; 1 for unsatisfied, 2 for no view and 3 for satisfied. Total scores ranged between 40to 120. Each subject’s satisfaction level will be categorized as follows: poor satisfaction <66, neutral66 - <94 and satisfaction ≥ 94, A pilot study was carried on 10% of the study sample to test the relevance, validity and clarity of tool as well as the time needed to complete it.
Finally, the collected data was revised, categorized, coded, computerized, tabulated and properly analyzed.
The main findings of the present study were:
Socio-demographic and clinical data interview schedule
- The mean age of the study subjects was 27.79 ± 5.91years.
- More than two thirds (61 .7 %) of the study subject aged 20 to less than 35 years old.
- Nearly one-half (49.2 %) of the study subjects had primary and preparatory school level of education.
- About three quarter (75.4 %) of the study subjects were housewives.
- More than Three quarter (76.7 %) of the study subjects had just enough monthly income.
- The majority (86.7%) of the study subjects were urban dwellers
- Nearly three quarter (73.3%) of the study subjects were live within crowded houses.
Subjects reproductive history:
- More than three quarter (77.5 %) of the study subjects had 1-3 pregnancies, 73.8 % had 1-2 deliveries and more than two thirds (66.3%) of the study subjects had no history of abortion.
- The majority (86.3 %) of study subjects had no history of stillbirths and (74.2 %) of the study subjects had a history of unplanned pregnancy.
- The majority (80.0 %) of the study subjects had 1 to 3 living children.
Previous and current use of contraceptive:
- Slightly more than two-thirds (64.6%) of the study subjects previously used family planning method.
- More than two third (67.7%) of the study subjects previously used intrauterine devices while two fifths (44.5 %) of them was previously used oral contraceptive.
- More than two thirds (63.2%) of the study sample decision making for family planning methods was made by husband.
- More than two fifths (44.5%) of the study sample duration of the previously family planning method used for 1 to 2 years.
- More than one half (53.5 %) of the study subject had regular follow up visits.
- Family planning center was place of follow up visits for more than two thirds (63.9%) of the study subjects while governmental hospital was used by only one fifth (25.3 %) of them.
- One half (52.5%) of the study subjects currently use contraceptive method, while (69.0%) of them using IUDs and 31.0% using oral contraceptive pills.
- The majority (83.3%) of the study subjects reported easy accessibility to the family planning center, Meanwhile slightly more than one half (51.3%) reported affordable transportation.
