Abstract

Background : End-stage renal disease (ESRD) has significantly increased in developing countries such as Egypt. Diabetes mellitus is still the leading cause of ESRD, while numbers of hypertensive patients among that population have significantly risen. Arterio-venous dialysis access is considered as the lifeline for hemodialysis patient and adequate functioning vascular access is essential for long-term hemodialysis.
Aim of the Work: The aim of the study is to discuss the role of color Doppler US versus the role of multislice CT venography in the evaluation of complicated dialysis access.
End-stage renal disease (ESRD) has significantly increased in developing countries such as Egypt. Arterio-venous dialysis access is considered as the lifeline for hemodialysis patient and adequate functioning vascular access is essential for long-term hemodialysis. In fact, malfunction of vascular access is the most frequent cause of hospitalization in patients who are on long-term hemodialysis .Multi-slice CT angiography is superior to color Doppler ultrasound in detection of central venous lesions and in the evaluating the complete vascular tree of failing AVFs, yet the Color Doppler US remains the readily available, inexpensive and noninvasive method for assessment of both anatomy and hemodynamics of an AVF.
