Abstract Hepatitis C virus is a global challenge and it is one of the main causes of liver disease worldwide and develops nutritional deficiencies. chronic hepatitis C infection causing about 2.4 million deaths each year. It is important to assess the nutritional status for this group of patients and design a nutritional regimen for them. The study aim was to determine effect of dietary modification on nutritional status and quality of life among patients with viral hepatitis C. Design: A quasi experimental research design was utilized to achieve the aim of this study. Setting: The study was carried out in outpatient clinics of Liver Institute at Shebin EL Kom District, Menoufia Governorate. Subjects: A random sample of 160 adult patients of both sexes with hepatitis C was selected and randomly divided into two equal groups. 80 patients for each. Tools of the study: Three tools were used for data collection: structured interviewing questionnaire, Nutritional assessment sheet and chronic liver disease questionnaire-hcv. Results: it is revealed that there was significant improvement in mean of carbohydrate and protein of study group 501.76±206.55 and 130.51±50.11 respectively at pre intervention to become 421.27±104.50 and 91.76±70.82 four months post intervention than control group. There was significant improvement of approximately all laboratory findings two and four months post intervention among study group than control group. The mean score of body mass index pre intervention was 29.12±3.65 kg/m2 for study group to become 28.55±3.36 kg/m2 four months post intervention. Also 95.0% of patients of study group had low quality of life score pre intervention to become 0% four months post intervention Conclusions: Nutritional status and quality of life were significantly improved among patients of study group than those who exposed only to the routine hospital care. Recommendations: Supervised health educational program about dietary modifications should be carried out for all patients with viral hepatitis C and illustrative booklet should be distributed to all patients with viral hepatitis C. |
