Abstract

Up to day, drip irrigation systems have reached to a high level of
technology. But, these systems are not able to show their potential benefits, due
to various reasons. Emitter clogging can affect on distribution uniformity and the
system performance, which has direct relationship with water quality. In this
study three types of emitters (pressure compensating, long path and turbo key)
with nominal discharges 4, 6 and 8 L.hr-1 respectively which were tested under
three types of water (Nile, drainage and fertilized water) with operating pressure
(75, 100, 125, 150 kPa) at spacing of 50cm and six laterals of 16mm diameter at
spacing 75 cm and 10m length for each lateral line. Drip irrigation system was
constructed in Agri. Eng. Dept; faculty of agriculture Menoufia University.
The research aims to evaluate three types of emitters have changing type and
quality of water and operating pressure based on hydraulic parameters , emitter
clogging percent%, accumulative clogging percent% and rate of accumulative
clogging/hr. All the last items were conducted to select the best emitter
performance for each water type by the effect of operating period. The results
showed that turbo key emitter is the best at all studied items for example after
181 hr of operating period; (1) Nile water at 100 kPa, clogging percent is (8.12,
16.72, and 30.00%) for turbo key, long path and pressure compensating
respectively. (2) Drainage water at 100 kPa, clogging percent is (12.24, 21.33
and 70.75%) for turbo key, long path and pressure compensating respectively.
(3) Fertilized water at 100 kPa, clogging percent is (11.38, 19.12 and 34.50%)
for turbo key, long path and pressure compensating respectively. Increasing the
operating pressure led to remove deposits outside the emitter and the clogging
percent decreased, as occurred with turbo key emitter. Both of water quality and
emitter type play an effective role in maintaining drip irrigation system
efficiency for a long time.
