Abstract

-Twelve recently dead and two alive water buffaloes (Bos bubalis L.) with an age ranging from 3-10 old years were used.
-The routine techniques of bone preparation, bone cleaning, drying, degrease and bleaching was also performed. Mounting of buffalo skeleton was also applied.
- Skulls preparation was performed and was used to for sagittal section in three skulls and another three skulls were used for studying the paranasal sinuses.
- Six recently dead buffaloes and another two live buffaloes were used for studying the regional anaesthesia.
-The study discussed the differences between the skeleton of the buffalo and ox, the topography of the paranasal sinuses in the buffalo and indicating best sites for trephining of these sinuses. The study also provided an anatomical guide indicating the accurate site of the nerve supplying the flank and head regions in relation to bony prominences.
-The study provided a key of osteomorphological features which allow the distinction between the skeleton of the buffalo and ox. Only a few of the smaller carpal and tarsal bones and sesamoid bones can not be separated yet.
-The study also concluded that the major paranasal sinuses in adult buffalo comprised the frontal sinus, maxillary sinus, palatine sinus and lacrimal sinus. The anatomical and radiographic description of these paranasal sinuses as well as its dimensions and communications has been presented. The sites of trephination of the frontal and maxillary sinuses were indicated.
- The study also discussed the regional anesthesia of the mid paralumbar fossa in the buffalo through three distal paravertebral injections. The sites of for anesthesia of the costoabdominal, iliohypogastric and ilioinguinal nerves were indicated.
- The study used the bony landmarks for indicating the site of anesthesia of the infraorbital, mental and cornual nerves, and the most clinically important sensory nerves in the head region.
- The obtained results were photographed, described and discussed with the similar literatures in bovine.
- The nomenclature used was adopted according to the Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria (2012).
