Abstract

Dementia is a clinical syndrome characterized by progressive deterioration in cognitive ability which is severe enough to interfere with daily functioning .The impairment in cognitive function is commonly accompanied, and occasionally preceded, by deterioration in emotional control, social behaviour, or motivation. The associations between psychological health and being an informal caregiver are well established. Clinical observation and early empirical research showed that assuming a care giving role can be stressful and burdensome. To investigate the prevalence of psychiatric morbidity in family caregivers for dementia patients and compare it to a control group of caregivers of other chronic physical illness. To study the different sociodemographic and clinical correlates associated with psychiatric morbidity among caregiver group. The participants included in the current study were 50 subjects recruited from the outpatient clinics of EL-Abbasia psychiatric hospital. They were subdivided into two groups. 1st group: A sample of 25 caregivers of dementia patients. 2nd group: A sample of 25 caregivers of chronic medical illness. In the current study, comparison between dementia caregivers and non dementia caregivers was done where dementia caregivers were found to have significantly higher scores of general health questionnaire 12 scale and zarit caregiver burden scale than non dementia caregivers, but there is no statistically significant difference between dementia caregivers and non dementia caregivers regarding age, educational level, occupation. We found significant difference between dementia caregivers and non dementia caregivers as regard to sex of the caregiver with 88%of the caregivers of dementia patients were women compared to 60% of the caregivers of the controls. There was significant relation between zarit burden scale scores, GHQ12 scores and occurrence of depression and anxiety in caregivers. The predictors of caregiver burden in our study were impairment of activities of daily living or instrumental activities of daily living and higher scores of GHQ.
