Abstract

Antenatal care (ANC) is the key entry point of a pregnant woman to receive broad range of health promotion and preventive services which promote the health of the mother and the baby. ANC is the care of a pregnant woman and her fetus by health care staff, including obstetricians, nurses, midwives and laboratory technicians from the time of conception to the onset of labor. ANC should focus on ensuring, supporting and maintaining maternal and fetal well-being throughout pregnancy and child birth. Perception of care is influenced by the expectations of the clients who use the care and by the actual nature of the care being provided.
The beliefs, values, and traditions of people influence their behavior in relation to seeking health services even when these services are accessible and effective.
A number of conceptual models or theories have been developed to improve health behavior. One of the most commonly used models is the health belief model. It specifies that the health beliefs of individual energize and direct behavior towards health care.
So this study aims to determine the relation between pregnant women’s health beliefs and pattern of antenatal care
The subjects were a convenience sample of 300 pregnant women attending 3 antenatal outpatient clinics affiliated to 3 hospitals in Alexandria (El-Shatby, Dar- Ismail, and Karmouz hospitals) affiliated to Alexandria University, Ministry of Health, and Health Insurance100 from each setting.
Two tools used to collect the necessary data.
Tool I: pregnant women’s socio-demographic data and reproductive history structured interview schedule.
Tool II: Health Belief Model (HBM), which is a modification of Rosenstock and Becker &Maiman .It includes( 22 )questions concerning its 5 main variables: Perceived susceptibility(7questions),Perceived severity(3questions), Perceived benefits(3 questions), Perceived barriers(3 questions),Modifying factors (6 questions).
A Pilot study was carried out on 30 of pregnant women ,who were excluded from the sample, to test the reverence and clarity of the tools and to estimate the time needed to complete them. Data collection over a period of five months from the beginning of June 2015 till the end of December 2016.Statistical analysis was done. The raw data were coded and transformed into coding sheets. The results were checked. Then, the data was entered into SPSS system files (SPSS package version 18) using personal computer. Output drafts were checked against the revised coded data for typing and spelling mistakes. Finally, analysis and interpretation of data were conducted.
