Abstract Nitrofurantoin and cotrimoxazole are antibiotics commonly used to treat urinary tract infections, but it also may be used to combat other types of bacterial infections. The present study was devised to inquire into the adverse effects of nitrofurantoin and cotrimoxazole on the rat foeti obtained from dams orally given nitrofurantoin and cotrimoxazole during gestation and suckling periods. I- Effects on developing foeti:The effects of both nitrofurantoin given orally 1.8 mg/200 gm b.wt./12 hrs on the 1st day of gestation for 7 consecutive days and co-trimoxazole given orally (5.8 mg trimethoprim /28.8 mg sulphamethoxazole) /200 gm b.wt./24 hrs on the1st day of gestation for 14 consecutive days were investigated on fourty mature female albino rats using twenty mature male albino rats for mating. Pregnant rats were classified into four equal groups each of ten. The first group was left as control. The second group was given nitrofurantoin on the 1st day of gestation for 7 consecutive days. The third group was given nitrofurantoin on the 8th day of gestation for 7 consecutive days. The fourth group was administered co-trimoxazole on the 1st day of gestation for 14 consecutive days. |
