Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic autoimmune inflammatory disease. It is a polyarticular disease affects the small and large joints. Temporomandibular joint is often affected in RA. The reported frequencies of TMJ involvement vary between 2% and 88%. Occasionally, TMJ may be the initial symptomatic joint in the body in patients with RA. The clinical complaint from the affected TMJ is usually minor and does not reflect the actual degree of radiographic destruction. The clinical complaints are usually in the form of joint pain, tenderness, sounds (clicking or crepitus) and limitation of mouth movements.
