Abstract This study aims at investigating ten short stories of Ernest Hemingway and Yusuf Idris. Focusing on two short story writers, the study sheds light on the stylistic devices used by both writers in forming their texts. It attempts to apply the stylistic model of analysis invented by Geoffrey Leech and Mick Short (1981) on the selected data. The study tries to find out the stylistic similarities and differences in the writers’ style and the degree of Hemingway’s influence on Idris’ writing style. The study is divided into three chapters plus an introduction and a conclusion. The introduction covers the history of stylistics, the two writers’ life and works, objectives, theoretical framework and the review of literature. The first and second chapters are devoted to analyzing the selected data from a stylistic perspective using the above mentioned stylistic approach. The main aim of chapter three is to provide an analytic comparison of the similarities and differences in both writers’ styles. The conclusion sums up the most important findings and suggestions for further research. |
