Abstract

This diserhtion covers studying the effect of row spacing and seeding r a t e on growth, yield and its components and quality of two flax c u l t i v a r s . The study was carried out at Sskha Agricultural Research Station durine 1978 and 1979 seasons . Ibch flax c u l t i v a r was planted in separate experiment i n the same area, Then, combined analysis was performed between the two cultivars of Glza 4 and Giza 5 . The design was split plot with four r e p l i - cates f o r each experiment . The main p l o t s were three row spaces i.e. 7.5, 15 and 22.5 cms., while the sub plots were six seeding r a t e i.e., 500, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500 and 3000 plants/rn2 . The resuxts obtained are summarized i n the following l i n e s , under t h e i r respective headings. A- Growth analysis and growth a t t r i b u t e s : 1- Dry matter accumulation : Giza 5 cultivar surpassed the other cultivar of Giza 4 i n dry matter accumulation in form of dry weight per plant in the most of growth stages studied but t h i s increase sometimes did not rexh the l e v e l of significance. Row spacing did not a f f e c t dry m a t t e r p e r plant i n both seasons . Whereas, the increme i n dry weight/plant obtained with decreasing seeding rzte . 2- Leaves percenkge : D r y leaves/total dry weight per plant increased significantly with Giza 5 cultivar than Giza 4 at the a l l of growth stages i n both seasons except at the third and faurth sampling dates i n 1978 season . Row spacing had no significmt effect on dry leaves percent . Leaves percent increased towards decreasing seeding rate at the f i r s t and second sampling dates, then, reversed trend were optained at the others of growth stages uptill the last stage i n both seasons . 3- Stems percentage : No s i g n i f i c m t differences between cultivars were noticed at most of the growth stages i n both seasons . Row spacing had no marked effect on stem percentage in both seasons . The percentage of stems increased significantly as the seeding r s t e increased, t h i s increase due t o the decrease in branches percentage at the high plant population.
