Abstract

Nursing learning achievement is one of the most important parts of students‟ educational preparation. It provides the student nurse to use their thinking for problem solving. Theoretical & practical knowledge provides nursing students with opportunities to learn the basic skills, behavior & attitude of nursing in a clinical setting. The learning environments influence the students‟ self-efficacy, of them to feel competent and confident in their abilities. Nurse educator must be a good facilitator, motivator & a good role model for students (Sue Wickham Community College, 2011).
This study aims to assess the factors affecting achievement of nursing students in the technical Nursing Institute.
Subject and methods of the current study will be discussed under the following four designs:-
I. Technical Design.
II. Operational Design.
III. Administrated Design.
IV. Statistical Design. I. Technical Design:
Technical design included, research design, research setting, design, research setting, and subject as was as tools for data collection.
Research Design: A descriptive design was utilized in this study to achieve the aim of the study.
Research Setting:
The study was conducted at Technical Health Institute of police affiliated to Ministry of the interior.
Research subjects:
A Convenient sample (70) enrolled in year 2014-2015 at first and second year at mentioned setting over a period of six months under the following inclusion criteria:
 Female Nursing Students.
 Students enrolled (33) at first year & (37) at second Year.
Tools of data collection:-
Data collection was obtained by using the following tools:
Tool I: Structure interview schedule(Appendix I&II): Designed interviewing schedule format was written in the simple Arabic language by the researcher. The researcher designed the tool in the light of relevant literature. It covered the following parts:-
Part I:
a. Social characteristics of Technical nursing students such as, age, academic year, birth order.
b. characteristic related to the parents such as educational level, occupation socioeconomic characteristic. It was developed by the researcher after reviewing of related literature this included Technical Nursing studied.
c. Assess level of Knowledge of nursing student about factors affected their achievement.
Tool II: Observation checklists to assess students practice during apply the Pediatric procedure (I M injection-Anthropometric measurement- gavage feeding-eye care- cord care- Infant bath) in the year 2014-2015(in lab. &in Hospital.
Tool III: student opinion about the affect their achievement during the teaching Learning process.Scoring system:
 As regards factors affecting achievement
Environment- psychiatry- technology- academic- social & family factors) of study sample each item scored into 2 if satisfied, 1 if unsatisfied. Then, according to their responses of nursing achievement was.
 As regard assess student practice related to pediatric procedure (IM injection-Anthropometric measurement- Infant bath) each item scored no. 2 if done no. 1 if not done was categorized into not done (<60%) and done (>60%) during the first semester of the academic year.
 As regard Students Knowledge toward Learning achievement contains 8 items; item I Learning opportunities contain 9 statements, item II Learning process contain 20 statements, item III Classroom discussion with teacher contain 21 statements, item IV student evaluation & communication contain 12 statements, item V Learning resources(book &library) contain 19 statements, item VI place of study contain 15 statements, item VII Lab.,nursing training & motivation contain 26 statements VIIII practical hospital training contain 26 statements, each item scored into 2 if satisfied and 1 if unsatisfied, then according to their responses knowledge categorized into unsatisfied knowledge (<70%) and satisfied knowledge (>70%).
 As regards assessing opinion of studied sample towards their nursing achievement contain 4 items, item I curriculum & interaction between teachers & students contain 8 statements, item II teaching methods contain 8 statements, item III self-confidence, Acquiring learning experience & nursing career contain 17 statements, item Iv Assessment & Examination contain 10 statements each item scored into 2 if agreed & 1 if disagreed, then categorized into negative opinion (<60%) & positive opinion (>60%).
II.Operational design:
The operational design of the present study includes: preparatory phase, pilot study, fieldwork and ethical consideration.
The preparatory phase:
This phase includes reviews of the literature and studied to cover the various aspects of the research problem, it was done by using the available articles, periodicals, magazines, and textbooks, and web sites to be acquainted with the research problem and to develop the study tools and content - validity was done by 3 experts in the pediatric nursing field from Ain Shams University. Their opinions were elected regarding content, consistency and clarity of data collected.
Ethical Consideration:
All the gathered data were used for research purpose only. The study sample was informed about the purpose and expected outcomes of the study and they were assured that the studies were harmless and their participation was voluntary and they had the right to withdraw from the study at any time. They were assured also that anonymity and confidentiality of all gathered data were guaranteed and used for research purpose only.
Pilot study:
A pilot study was carried out at nursing institute, affiliated to Ministry of Interior. A pilot study was carried out for 10% (n=7) of the total number of nursing students (studied sample). The pilot study was done to ensure clarity, validity and feasibility of conduction of study tools and time needed for each tool based on the findings of the pilot study, some questions and items were rephrased, then the final forms were developed. The pilot sample not excluded from the study because there was no change done in the study tools.
Field work:
The actual field started from first week Academic year of September 2014 up to the end of January 2015 for data collection. The researcher was available in the study settings four days per week using the previously mentioned study tools from (8 Am to 2Pm) from Sunday to Wednesday together data used the designed interview schedule and checklist. The researcher provides a simple explanation of the objective of the study to gain the cooperation of the studied sample. The sheet was distributed to the students; the time required was around 20-30 minutes. The researcher collected the data by individual interview in practical day, in between lectures, during training. Observation sheet was filled by the researcher while the studied students who practice in the clinical teaching areas. The researcher take 2nd year because number of 1st year not enough for study.
III. Administrative design:
An official permission was obtained from the dean of the faculty of the nursing Ain shams university and the police institute directors affiliated to ministry of interior in order to conduct the study after clear explanation about the aim of the study and its benefits.
IV. Statistical Design:
Data were revised, coded, analyzed using suitable statistical tests and in the form of frequencies, percentages, arithmetic mean and standard deviations for quantitative variables and chi-square test was used for comparisons between quantitative variables. The qualitative data were also analyzed applying appropriate statistical method to determine whether there was a statistical significant difference or not. The Statistical significant difference was considered at P- value <0.001. Results are presented in the form of tables & figures.
