Abstract

Adolescence is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the period from 10-19 years of age and can be considered the transitional stage from childhood to adulthood. Adolescent girls may experience physical and emotional changes; physical changes include growth of breasts and body, growth of pubic and underarm hair, as well as menarche, acne and widening of hips.
The menstrual period is a natural phenomenon that occurs throughout the reproductive age of most women. The first menstruation menarche is the first experience of menstruation that may be frightening, if adolescence does not know about menstruation she can be shocked to see blood coming out of her vagina. In fact, menstrual hygiene is fundamental to the dignity and wellbeing of women and girls and an important part of the basic hygiene, sanitation and reproductive health services is the right of each of them.
Poor menstrual hygiene increases the risk of infection than normal. The health problems and complications of poor menstrual hygiene are the result of inaccurate and incomplete information provided to the girls through limited sources. The nurse has a role in providing accurate information about menstrual hygiene and self-care practices to reduce disease burden and poor health outcome associated with poor menstrual hygiene and self-care among these group. This will help adolescent girls to develop positive self-image and progress smoothly through this maturational phase. So, the present study assessed adolescent students’ knowledge and compliance with menstrual hygiene. A variety of statistical analyses were employed to answer research question related to this area of interest.
Aims of the study:
The study Aimed to assess adolescent students’ knowledge and compliance with menstrual hygiene.
To fulfill the study aim:
The study was conducted at all (8) educational zones affiliated to Alexandria governorate. One secondary school is randomly selected from each zone. It was carried out on 360 adolescent students who selected by a convenience sample technique.
