Abstract

Chitosan, a bio-based polymer which has similar characteristics to those of cellulose, has strong affinity for metal ions. Thus, it has received increased attention for the preparation of heterogeneous catalysts. Recent studies demonstrated that chitosan based catalysts had high sorption capacities, chelating activities, stability and versatility, which could be potentially applied as green reactants in various scientific and engineering applications. The present study involved the preparation of silver nanoparticles incorporated into chitosan in aqueous medium and carried on specific polymer to form thin films used for various purposes including antibacterial activity, photooxidation and heavy metal removal. The spectroscopic characteristics of Silver/Chitosan/Polymer and thin films were characterized by the ultraviolet visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The results obtained illustrated that the photodegradation rates, heavy metals removal and antimicrobial activity against gram negative bacteria like E.coli, and gram positive bacteria like G.bacillus, increases with increasing the different ratios of chitosan and silver nanoparticles incorporated in polymer thin films, respectively.
