Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to verify the SN concept in gastric cancer surgery; therefore, we analyzed the histologic results of permanent tissue sections to assess the status of the SNs and other lymph nodes.
According to our present study and its results, we conclude that lymphatic mapping and sentinel lymphadenectomy are feasible in gastric carcinoma and identify aberrant lymphatic drainage. The SN status accurately reflects the regional node status.
The ability to identify a tumor-free SN might enable the surgeon to avoid the morbidity associated with radical lymphadenectomy in patients with gastric carcinoma without adding significantly to the time, cost, or morbidity of the primary surgical procedure.
So we recommend intraoperative pathologic examination in further studies for developing a future individualized function preserving lymphadenectomy procedure on the basis of SN m.
