Abstract

Absence of a definitive treatment for Mneiere’s disease, make reaching an effective management a priority.A possible solution could be derived from a supplementation of a nutritional principle.Omega-3 fatty acids are of particular interest, due to its multiple reported beneficial effects. The aim of this study is to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of omega-3 fatty acids as a supplementary treatment in management of Meniere’s disease. It was a prospective study encompassing 40 patients suffering from Meniere`s disease, divided equally into study group and control group. A study group which use 1.5 gm/day omega-3 fatty acid capsules, in addition to pre study routine Meniere’s disease medications. And a control group, which use only pre study routine Meniere’s. Patients were evaluated before and after the four months trial period. We concluded that there was no difference between both groups as regard hearing and caloric testing. And there were no improvement noticed in both groups what so ever. As regard vertigo severity, frequency and tinnitus severity, insignificant improvement was noticed in both groups however it was prominent in study group than control group, but yet no significant difference. Better results at study group could be attributed to omega-3 effect. Further study is needed to confirm or deny.
