Abstract

Optic disc pit is a rare congenital optic disc abnormality that typically appear as a solitary, oval, gray-white depression located in the temporal aspect of the optic disc. Patients with optic disc pit sometimes remain asymptomatic, but 25% to 75% become symptomatic and present with visual deterioration after developing optic pit related maculopathy with serous macular detachment and/or macular retinoschisis, most commonly in their third or forth decade. The pathogenesis of optic disc pit maculopathy and the source of the retinal fluid remains controversial, and this lack of clarity has spawned a diversity of treatment approaches with variable efficacy. The most widely accepted treatment is a surgical approach involving pars plana vitrectomy with various adjunct procedures, including internal limiting membrane peel, laser photocoagulation and gas tamponade.
