Abstract

Introduction: Cataract is one of the leading curable causes of blindness worldwide. One of the major problems facing ophthalmic surgeons after phacoemulisification is corneal decompensations due to endothelial cell loss. Other researchers have since provided evidence of endothelial cell protection during phacoemulsification in humans using OVD.
Aims: The aim is to study the efficacy of ocular viscoelastic solutions in protection of the corneal endothelium during phacoemulsification by measuring the cumulative dissipated energy and specular microscopy.
Methodology: Gender distribution included 17 males and 13 females in group 1 while in group 2 it included 16 males and 14 females as shown in table 1 and figure 12.
Results: This study comprised 60 cases with nuclear cataract which were divided into 2 groups. group 1 included phacoemulsification cataract surgery using Infiniti phacoemulsification device with hydroxy methyl cellulose as an OVD. group 2 included phacoemulsification cataract surgery using Infiniti phacoemulsification device with sodium hyaluronate as an OVD.
Conclusion: our study showed that CDE range (10-20) is a safe range on corneal endithelium regardless the OVD used in phacoemulsification.
