Abstract

Knowledge of basic genetics and genomic applications and resources will give nurses the foundation to provide competent genomic health care today and in the future. The aim of this study was : -1- To assess the effect of a guideline module on developing pediatric nurses core competencies in conducting genetic counseling. 2- Design and implement a standardized guideline module based on the actual assessment findings to develop nurses’ knowledge and skills in conducting genetic counseling. 3- Evaluate the outcome of the guideline module on nurses’ knowledge and skills in conducting genetic counseling.Hypothesis:- 1-Pediatric nurses in selected settings have inadequate knowledge and practices for conducting genetic counseling. 2-On posttest pediatric nurses in selected settings will have more adequate knowledge and practices for conducting genetic counseling after implementing a standardized guideline module than on pretest.Settings:- The study was conducted at Pediatric departments in Menoufia University Hospital and MCH centers at Sebin El-Kom city (kably and Bahary). Sample:- Available nurses working in the selected settings (60) were included in the study. The number of nurses who shared in the study from Menoufia University Hospital and MCH centers of Sebin El-Kom city (kably and Bahary) was 36 and 24 respectively. Were the number of nurses who shared in the study from MCH center of Sebin El-Kom city (kably) and MCH center of Sebin El-Kom city (Bahary) was 10 and 14 respectively. Instruments: Tow Instruments were developed for data collection:-Instrument one:: It was structured interview questionnaire sheet to assess knowledge of nurses about genetics and genetic counseling. It contained five parts: Part one: - characteristics data of studied nurses. Part two: - Basic knowledge of nurses about genetics. Part three: - Reported knowledge of nurses about genetic diseases. Part four: -Reported nursing knowledge about genetic counseling practices and experiences. Part five:- Sources of information: school and college education, books, training courses, seminars, conferences, computer based learning, …etc. Instrument two: It was an observational checklist about core competencies of nurses in conducting genetic counseling. It included assessment of nurses’ practices at genetic counseling such as professional responsibilities, nursing assessment, application genetic knowledge, identification, referral activities, provision of education care, and support.
