Abstract

This study aims at finding out whether mass media in general and social media in particular have had an influence on the events and the aftermath of January 25 Revolution. In order to do so, the researcher collected 10 online sources from Reuters News Agency and British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in English in order to analyze them in search for such influence if any. The tools used in this analysis are discourse analysis tools, especially framing and rhetoric. The theoretical framework adopted by the researcher is the Discourse Analysis of Fairclough and van Dijk. Review of literature has shown that no study or article has tackled the influence of mass media and social media on the protesters and the readers of the news using the technique of framing and rhetoric. Nine studies and articles have been reviewed. The researcher has reached a group of findings that were based on the results of the analysis. The major question raised at the introduction of the study has been answered in the conclusion, Which is whether mass media in general and social media in particular have had an influence on the events and the aftermath of January 25 Revolution or not. Finally, the study suggested further studies using the same techniques
