Abstract

Introduction: Warts are benign epithelial neoplasms affecting the epithelium of the skin and mucous membranes that result from infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). Common warts affect patients’ quality of life by causing adverse psychological effects, also certain types of HPV may induce life-threatening malignancies. Aim of the Work: The aim of this work was to evaluate the level of serum IL-10, IFN-γ before and after multiple intradermal injections of BCG vaccine and to compare the levels in clinical responders versus non responders to evaluate its possible clinical efficacy in the treatment of warts. Subjects and Method: The present study was single-blinded, controlled and prospective carried out on 25 male patients with viral warts attending the outpatient clinic of Police Hospital of soldiers during the period from March 2013 to March 2014 as patients and 25 healthy individuals as controls. Controls and patients were matched with age, sex and residence. Results: Twenty five patients were recruited to this study with other 25 healthy individuals serveing as a control group. The patients’ parameters. Conclusion: In conclusion, BCG vaccine injection shows a good efficacy and safety in treatment of multiple warts. Serum IL-10 and IFN-γ appear to decrease following injection, this is not usually associated with wart clearance denoting a role for the other immunological mediators in such clearance.
