Abstract

Etiology of pre-eclampsia has not been completely understood but many theories have been proposed in conjunction with its causes. Because of its morbid course, it is necessary to find its risk factors. However, due to lack of enough knowledge about its etiology, different researches have been performed on various materials in order to find its causes; one of these theories concerns the underlying endocrine changes and measurement of different androgens.
The current study is a case-control study which was conducted at Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital during the period between May 2016 and December 2016.
The aim of the study was to compare between androgens level (serum total and free testosterone) in women with preeclampsia and normal ones in the third trimester of pregnancy (28-40 weeks).
Forty pregnant women with pre-eclampsia were included as group I (Case Group), along with forty normotensive pregnant women as group II (Control Group).
Serum total testosterone and free testosterone were significantly higher in women of pre-eclampsia when compared to women of normal pregnancy.
Also, there is a positive correlation between serum total and free testosterone and with systolic blood pressure, thrombocytopenia and liver enzymes.
