Abstract

The Um Ud area covers about 22 km2 and locates in the south central part of the Eastern Desert of Egypt. The area is covered by an island-arc metavolcanic rocks and metagabbro-diorite complex. The investigated rock types can be classified into two varieties least altered and altered ones. Three main rock types are considered; the metavolcanic, the metagabbro-diorite, and the tonalite rocks and all dissected by the mineralized quartz vein. Statistical treatment was carried out on the obtained data, including the determination of arithmetic mean, standard deviation, geometric mean, geometric standard deviation, in addition to the construction of cumulative frequency curves.The calculated background values using cumulative frequency and Dendrogram curves for Au, Ag and Mo are higher than their normal ranges in the studied rocks indicating local background and consequently threshold values due to mineralization. The other elements (Cu, Zn and S) have normal background values. In general, Au, Ag, Zn and S have considerable number of anomalous samples using cumulative frequency curves. Geochemical maps were constructed to define the spatial distribution of studied ore elements as well as vertical distribution in relation to the mineralization. The distribution of Ag/Au ratios of mineralized rocks and quartz vein is a good indicator to the distribution of gold mineralization in the study area.The gold mineralization at the Um Ud gold mine area is associated with processes related to post-peak hydrothermal activity which include the formation of the quartz veins.
