Abstract The Banking industry in Egypt is amongst the oldest and largest in the region. Unfortunately, the Egyptian banking sector is currently facing moments of crisis. In fact, the most important challenge facing the Egyptian banking sector at the present time is the problem of non performing loans. This problem has been accumulating in the Egyptian banking sector during the past few years. Recent years have witnessed considerable increase in the amount of non-performing loans in the Egyptian banking sector. Banks are faced with a huge number of non-performing loans. The majority of the non- performing loans exists at state-owned banks and is related to state-owned companies. In addition, other non- performing loans are related to local private investors. Unfortunately; some businessmen had escaped out of the country after having been found guilty of deceiving banks, lifting millions of Egyptian pounds in unpaid loans. While others still exist in Egypt and are looking for a solution. In fact, the phenomenon of loan defaulters has been worsening over the past few years. |
