Abstract

Health care waste management has become a critical issue and has taken a central place in the national health polices of many countries. Waste generated from healthcare facilities is a potential public health hazard if handled, treated or disposed incorrectly. It can present risks to the health and safety of people at work, members of the public and the environment. Health care waste includes any waste generated within healthcare facilities, research centers and laboratories, it includes also waste originating from minor and scattered sources, including waste produced in the course of health care undertaken in the home (e.g. home dialysis, self-administration of insulin, recuperative care). Aim of the study: to assess hospital waste management in Tanta University Hospitals, Tanta city, Gharbia Governorate, Egypt. Subjects and Methods: This study was carried out in Tanta University hospitals, Tanta city, Gharbia Governorate, Egypt. The study subjects included 8 hospitals and 14 outpatient clinics. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) hospital waste management assessment form was the tool used for data collection in this study. The ICRC form covers the (8) topics of hospital waste management namely; general issues, minimization, sorting of waste, collection and storage, transport, treatment and final disposal, staff protective measures and training. The different units, departments and clinics of each one of the 8 hospitals and 14 outpatient clinics were visited and the used tool was filled by the researcher for each visited department, then data.
