Abstract

Edentulism is considered a poor health outcome and may compromise quality of
life. Most edentulous patients have used complete dentures in early days which provide
them with functional recovery and esthetical satisfaction at a lower cost.
Implant supported or retained prosthesis, have many advantages over conventional
dentures, including good stability, good retention and improved function. The concept
of overdentures originally involved fixing mechanical attachments to teeth roots
in order to enhance retention and stability of conventional dentures.
This in-vitro study was done to compare changes of retention levels of three different
types of overdenture attachments after a 5500 cycles of insertion and removal,
which represents a 5 year period of usage assuming removal of the prosthesis three
times daily.
Two implant analogues were installed 22 mm apart in an acrylic resin block. This
acrylic resin block with the analogues was used with all specimens for standardization
purposes.
Twenty one heat cured acrylic resin blocks 4 Cm in length, 2 Cm in width and 2
Cm in height, were prepared.
These blocks were divided into three groups:
 group A, included ten blocks that were used for snap (ball and socket) attachment
group (contained female parts of snap attachment).
 group B, included a single block used for locator attachment group, (contained
titanium male harboring the nylon male). Due to the interchanging capacity
of the nylon male, this single block had been used for ten samples by
changing the nylon male after each full cycle of measurement.
