Abstract Obtectives: to demonstrate the correlation between pre- and post-treatment platelet indices; MPV, PDW and PCT values in idiopathic thrombocytopenicpurpura patients (ITP) and to assess the predictive value of platelet indices at time of presentation for response to treatment in those patients. Methods:fiftynewly diagnosed patients with primary ITP, twenty-five adult and twenty-five pediatric patients were selected from the Hematology Clinics of Ain Shams University Hospitals during the period from December 2015 to June 2016. Two samples were collected from all patients; first one at the time of diagnosis (Pre-treatment CBC).The second sample was collected after the treatment (post treatment CBC).Platelet count and indices (MPV),(PDW) and (PCT) were derived from LH-750 haematology analyzer. Results:We obtained high statistical significant differences between MPV and PCT values before after initial treatment(P<0.01), statistical significant differences between PDW in pediatric group (P<0.05) but PDW showed no statistical significant differences (P >0.05) in adult group. Conclusion:MPV and PDW are increased at the time of diagnosis of ITP and they decrease after treatment. Measuring of pre-treatment (MPV and PCT) provides useful prognostic indicator of the response to treatment in primary ITP patients.PDW cannot be considered one of the prognostic indicators in primary ITP adult patients. |
