Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare the splint effect of four mini-implants; surgically installed in the anterior region of the mandible; by two different bar designs; rigid (milled- in) and resilient bar joint; to assist mandibular overdenture regarding changes in the posterior residual alveolar ridge area and the peri-implant tissue health. *Six healthy completely edentulous male patients were selected for this study.4-Mini implants were surgically installed in the anterior region of the mandible. All patients were scheduled to receive maxillary complete dentures opposed by mandibular complete overdentures. According to the splint bar design, patients were randomly classified into two equal groups as follows: group (I): where each patient received mandibular overdenture assisted by milled-in splint bar design ;and group (II) : where each patient received mandibular overdenture assisted by splint bar joint design. Peri-implant tissue health changes were measured for each implant immediately at loading,6 and 12 months after denture insertion. The posterior residual ridge changes were measured radiographically after 12 months of denture insertion. Results: A statistically significant difference in mandibular posterior residual ridge area were observed between the two splint bar designs. A statically insignificant difference in the peri-implant tissue health was found between the two splint bar designs. Conclusion: Milled-in bar splint of four mini implants installed in the anterior area of the mandible maintains the posterior mandibular alveolar ridge after one year of mandibular overdenture insertion compared with joint bar.
