Abstract

The contraceptive effect of breastfeeding has been studied both prospectively and retrospectively. Breastfeeding offers a high degree of contraceptive protection under certain circumstances. For those women who do not meet the criteria of protection defined as LAM or those who intend to have a long-term contraception, another reliable method should be initiated early postpartum. The incidence of unwanted pregnancy during breastfeeding is quite high in Egypt. It was estimated to be prerequisites of LAM may expire at any time when woman may not be ready to visit a clinic to initiate the use of contraception. LNG- EC pills could solve this problem if probably used and can decrease the incidence of unwanted pregnancy during breastfeeding. The knowledge and practice of (EC) in Egypt is quite restricted and probably used as a backup of LAM, it may decrease the incidence of occurrence of unexpected pregnancy accidents until women could initiate the use of long term method of contraception. This study was a parallel randomized controlled trial to compare the outcome results of the use and none use of ECPs as a backup of LAM. The work was conducted at the Emergency and the postpartum wards of Obstetrics
