Abstract Education and training are important elements in patient safety practice, Health care provider education is used nationwide to orient professionals about various aspects of patient safety and how errors are identified. Therefore developing instructional patient safety manual for nursing personnel as a mean to improve patient safety practice used to introduce or reinforce safe practices that are proven to eliminate or minimize harm to patients. Aim: This study aimed to develop instructional patient safety manual for the nursing personnel as a mean to improve patient safety practice. Subjects and Method: A pre-experimental research design was conducted to meet the aim of the study; target sample included all available number of the nursing personnel working in the selected critical care units at Menoufia University Hospital and Liver Institute at Shebin El-kom, Menoufia Governorate (n=95).Tools: three tools used in the study including: - knowledge assessment questionnaire with the socio-demographic data sheet, observational checklist for nurses performance and Unit Structure Observational Checklist. Results showed a positive improvement in the knowledge & practice scores after implementing instructional patient safety manual. A positive, non-significant correlation between nurse’s knowledge and practice scores after implementing manual was detected. Conclusion On the light of the current study it can be concluded that the nurses’ knowledge regarding patient safety were not enough with some unsafe practices. There was a lack of educational materials, policies and protocol about patient safety. The instructional patient safety manual had a positive effect in improving the nurses’ knowledge and practices regarding patient safety measures. Recommendation: Replication of the study on a large probability sample from different units is required to allow generalizability of the findings. Creating ongoing educational sessions for nurses and periodic refresher training courses should be provided in order to keep nurses updating knowledge and practice regarding to patient safety. Periodic follow-up for nurses’ performance regarding patient safety practice is required to provide more information on the lasting impact of the educational sessions. |
