Abstract Background: Insomnia is a form of chronic sleep problem which impacts the life of elderly people negatively. The underlying factors for insomnia are physiological changes of the sleep-wake cycle, co-morbid diseases and drug treatment. Cognitive behavioral therapy is an effective non-pharmacologic treatment for insomnia in older adults. Aim: this study aimed to examine the effect of cognitive behavioral therapy on quality of sleep pattern among elderly people with insomnia. Design: A quasi experimental design was used. Setting: The study was conducted at Kafer Tanbedy village, Menoufia Governorate. Sample: one hundred (100) subjects were selected randomly. They divided into equal two groups; study and control group. Tools: Two tools were used include: constructed interviewing questionnaire and The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).Results: The results showed that subjective sleep quality mean scores of the study group diminished post intervention 0.42±0.57 than pre intervention 1.44±0.64. In addition sleep duration mean scores of the study group decreased post intervention 0.46±0.58 than pre intervention 1.76±0.85. The mean score of habitual sleep efficiency of study group was diminished post intervention to be 0.48±0.71 than pre intervention 1.42±1.33 .The percentage of poor sleepers of the study group decreased from 100% pre intervention to 20% post intervention. Also, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) global scores showed significant decrease post intervention than pre intervention by 68.78% in the study group compared to only 10% in control group with high statistical significant differences. Conclusion: Cognitive behavioral therapy can be considered a useful non-pharmacologic approach to improve sleep quality in elderly people with insomnia. Recommendations: Raising the awareness of the elderly themselves and professional staff about insomnia, its impact on their quality of life and different management modalities. |
