Abstract

The study was carried out at the casualty ward of the department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Al Shohadaa General Hospital on 100 women undergone cesarean section with spinal anaesthesia between December 2013 and September 2014. All patients were subjected to full history, full clinical examination (general, abdominal and local examinations), investigations (U/S scan& CBC).
The 100 women were allocated to one of two equal groups each consists of 50 women.
group (I), Ondansetron group (case), who was administered 4 mg intravenous ondansetron diluted in 10 mL of saline given 5 minutes prior to performing the spinal anesthetic.
group (II), Placebo group (control), who was administered 10 mL of saline given 5 minutes prior to performing the spinal anesthetic.
The total number of pregnant women who did not receive vasopressors was higher in group I than group II and the difference was statistically significant
The total number of pregnant women who complained of nausea & vomiting was higher in group II than group I and the difference was statistically significant. The difference in systolic blood pressure between the two groups was significant.
There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups as regarding the mean of the age, BMI. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups as regarding the diastolic blood pressure, the mean blood pressure &the heart rate before spinal anaesthesia.
There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups as regarding the mean values of the heart rate before spinal anesthesia, after 10 minute, after 30 minute, after 40 minute, after 1h and after 2h.But there were statistically significant difference between the two groups as regarding the mean pulse just after spinal anesthesia (p=0.02), after 20 minute (p= 0.01) and 50 minute (p=0.02).
SBP measurements were significantly decreased in group II when compared with group I.
There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups as regarding the mean values of the mean blood pressure after 10 minute, after 20 minute, after 30 minute, after 40 minute, after 50 minute, after 1h and after 2h.But there is statistically significant difference between the two groups just after spinal anaesthesia.
There was statistically significant difference between the two groups as regarding vasopressor whether the women needed or didn’t need vasopressor. The need for vasopressor was significantly lower in group 1 than group 2 (30% vs 70%) respectively, meanwhile the need for no vasopressor was significantly higher in group 1 than group 2 (58% VS 42%) respectively. There was statistically significant difference between the two groups as regarding the dose of vasopressor.
There was statistically significant difference between the two groups as regarding nausea and vomiting. But there was no statistically significant difference as regarding shivering.
